Oakmont Scout troop marks 75th anniversary

Boy Scout Troop 854 of Oakmont will celebrate its 75th anniversary this year at a gathering and dinner from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 3 in the dining room at Oakmont Presbyterian Church, 415 Pennsylvania Ave.

Formerly known as Troop 54, the troop will welcome all current and former Scouts and leaders to the event. Dinner will be served and there will be displays of troop memorabilia, photographs and guest speakers.

Vandergrift PD to collect school supplies

The Vandergrift Police Department is collecting supplies through Aug. 15 for the students at Kiski Area East Elementary School in the borough.

Items being collected listed in order of need includes tissues, dry erase markers, boys backpacks, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer and crayons. Monetary donations are also welcome and will be used to purchase supplies.

Contributions can be left in care of Officer Joe Gray at the police station.

Sportsmen’s association plans youth Sportsfest

Vandergrift Sportsmen’s Association will host a free NRA-supported Youth Sportsfest from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the club, Sportsmen’s Drive, Washington Township.

Activities will include archery, flintlock rifle, 22-gauge rifle and clay target shooting. Information will be available from the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission, Pa. Game Commission, Tri-County Trout Club and the Wild Turkey Federation.

Today: Arnold United Methodist Church, 1801 Leishman Ave., will host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon at the church. Aug. 27: Summer’s Last Fling, a fundraiser for the Outdoor Discovery Center at Crooked Creek, will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the center, 142 Kerr Road. There will be music by the 7 Mile Run Band, a rock-climbing wall, food, drinks, raffles, silent auction and nature activities for the whole family. Admission: $20; children, $12. Sunday: Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, 411 McKinley Ave., will have an outdoor Mass at 11 a.m. on the church lawn. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Recipients must drive up and remain in their vehicles. First-time recipients must provide present their own identification, the child’s birth certificate and a current WIC or SNAP card.

Today: Harrison Hills Park will host Park After Dark: View the Perseid Meteor Shower with Park Rangers from 9 to 11 p.m. at the park Yakaon Shelter. Park rangers will be available to answer questions. Bring a blanket or chair. Drop in any time between 9 and 11 p.m. Free.

The drawing will be at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 19. Proceeds benefit auxiliary projects at the hospital.
